Earlier this year I produced a series of illustrations on commission for Trelleborgs museum in southern Sweden. They were for a permanent exhibition about a neolithic settlement in Skateholm, near Trelleborg. This is one of the illustrations, a charcoal and chalk drawing, depicting one of the graves found during excavations of the site. The grave contained the remains of a woman (seated as shown in the illustration) and what is believed to be a newborn infant, suggesting that both mother and child died shortly after childbirth. Beside her is a bowl containing provisions for their journey into the next world.
